Beyond Manhattan

New York is more than just Manhattan, and the outer boroughs, have plenty of attractions to explore. Walk over the famous Brooklyn Bridge to find the perfect vantage point for taking photos, and once you're in Brooklyn, wander along the Promenade - where the best views of Manhattan can be found. Downtown Brooklyn is packed with great shops, bars and restaurants, as well as a vibrant arts scene. If you want to know how all those New Yorkers get around, the New York Transit Museum explains the incredible works of engineering and sheer bravery that made building the subway possible.

Further out, there's plenty of old-fashioned fun at the Coney Island amusement park. You can still get a thrill on that most famous of rides, the Cyclone rollercoaster, before taking a stroll on the boardwalk along the Atlantic Ocean waterfront. If you're hungry, have a hot dog - Coney Island claims to be the snack's original home.

Queens is New York's most ethnically diverse borough, quite a claim in such a multi-national city. The number Seven subway line through Queens has been dubbed the 'International Express' and designated a national historic trail. Take the train out to Flushing and then work your way back, hopping on and off to sample different worlds on the way - from Colombian to Polish, Greek to Indian. Queens is also home to the Museum of the Moving Image, a must for film-lovers, it has thousands of exhibits and some great interactive bits too - where you can put yourself into some iconic movies.

North of Manhattan explore the home of hip-hop -the Bronx. Though still one of the more rough-and-ready boroughs, the Bronx has plenty to attact visitors. The Bronx Zoo is one of the best in the country and a great place to take the kids, while nearby the New York Botanical Garden is one of the world's greatest - with two-hundred-and-fifty acres of gorgeous gardens, forests, and the largest Victorian glasshouse in America. Sports fans will find not one, but two Yankee Stadiums in the Bronx. The old one, dubbed the 'most famous stadium since the Roman Coliseum' no longer hosts games, but stands next to the impressive new stadium where the undisputed kings of baseball strut their stuff. You can take a tour round the New York Yankees museum and Monument Park where plaques commemorate the team's baseball greats such as Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio.
